মঙ্গলের মেঘ এক দূর্লভ বস্তু, তার পাতলা বায়ুমন্ডলের জন্য। তবে বছরের সবচেয়ে ঠাণ্ডা সময়ে নিরক্ষীয় অঞ্চলের এই মেঘমালার দেখা মেলে। গবেষকরা আগের বছর (পৃথিবীর দুই বছরের আগে) খেয়াল করেন, তাদের ধারণার চেয়ে আগে এই মেঘের জন্ম হচ্ছে, যার জন্য এ বছর তারা তৈরী ছিলেন।
এই ছবিগুলো শুধু অসাধারণই নয়, নাসার কিউরিওসিটি টিমকে নতুন এক দিশা দিয়েছে। সময়ের আগের এই মেঘগুলো বেশি উচ্চতায় অবস্থিত মঙ্গলের বেশিরভাগ সাধারণ মেঘের চেয়ে। পৃষ্ঠের ৩৭ মাইল ওপরের দেখা মেলে সাধারণ মেঘমালার। এই মেঘগুলো সাধারণত বরফ দ্বারা তৈরী। তবে অধিক উচ্চতার মেঘমালা কার্বন-ডাই-অক্সাইড, অথবা ড্রাই আইসের তৈরী হতে পারে।
কিউরিওসিটি একইসাথে সাদা-কালো এবং রঙিন ছবি তোলে, তবে কালো সাদা ছবিগুলো মেঘের পরিষ্কার চিত্র প্রদান করতে।
সবচেয়ে চমৎকার ছবিগুলো হলো ‘Mother of pearl’ মেঘের, যা প্যাস্টেল কালারের মতো দেখতে। মেঘের রং গুলো মঙ্গলে খালি চোখে দেখা সম্ভব এবং যেখানে লাল, সবুজ, নীল ও গোলাপি রং এর অসাধারণ সব রং এর মেঘের দেখা মেলে।
